Stop 9: The Railway Arches (VGR009)

Location: The corner of Bowes Hill and The Green. The arches span Woodberry Lane and Finchdean Road

The Railway Arches c1935

  • The arches were erected with the coming of the Railway in 1859.
  • The railway played an important part in the village’s transformation.
  • The railway and its siding benefited the local brickworks.
  • The Motte and Bailey Castle was destroyed by the railway works.
  • The White Hart Pub was demolished and the Castle Inn built nearby.
